Candy Cane mountains

Azerbaijan boasts one of its most picturesque roadways, extending approximately 40 kilometers from the Guba-Baku highway towards the mountain village of Altiaghaj in the west. Somewhere in the middle of this journey lies a breathtaking valley, surrounded by undulating shale mountains.

These mountains exhibit astonishing swirls of red, orange, pink, and chalk-like colors, captivating the attention of British travel writer Mark Elliott, known for the widely read 'Azerbaijan' guidebook. He affectionately dubbed them the "Candy Cane Mountains," a name that has endured among travelers ever since. The mesmerizing hues are attributed to alterations in the oxidation state of iron compounds within the rock caused by groundwater

The best hiking time in this area is during the autumn or spring. Make sure to take a moment to look down at your feet; you may stumble upon miniature fossils or even a belemnite resembling a squid from the Cretaceous period.
