At an elevation exceeding 2,000 meters (6,500 feet), Khinaliq stands as one of the highest and most remote villages in the region. The population is only 2000 people which speaks their own distinct language (Ketsh). Khinaliq has an ancient traditions of making colorful woolen socks. For many years, families in Khinaliq have treasured the tradition of knitting dozens of pairs of socks each year. What makes it even more fascinating is that each family had its own special sock pattern, and they would pass these designs down through generations. So, you could actually tell which family made a particular sock just by looking at its pattern!
